Children such as Risala can easily feel lonely or excluded. It is difficult to change such a situation by yourself and thus we give these children a buddy. In our project a buddy is a (graduated) student between 18 and 28 years old. For half a year, the buddy will hang out once a week with the child, thereby functioning as a role model. Together they will undertake various activities. At first they will meet up at the child’s home and after having built up a basic trust relationship they start doing things outdoors.
Buddies for children
This project commits itself to children between 9 and 12 years old, so-called pre-pubescents, who feel excluded and can’t participate in the same after school activities as their peers.
For instance, one of the children in the project is Risala. She is 10 years old and loves dancing, playing and doing handicrafts with other children. Nevertheless she never goes to the playground, a community centre or a sports club, and after school she spends her time at home by herself.
What we do
The aim of this match is to decrease the child’s isolation, stimulate its partaking in social activities and thus contribute to its self-confidence. The contact broadens the horizon of the child as well as the student. Ideally, the child will continue to participate in after-school activities, when the buddy contact stops after six months.
Are you a student and would you like to accompany a child?
Does the abovementioned appeal to you and are you available for volunteer work for four hours a week during the next six months? Note that there are limited opportunities if you do not speak Dutch.
If you want more information on volunteering, please send an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or call us at us at +31 20 531 76 00.
