Jocks in Amsterdam South

Geplaatst op 3 December 2024

That more and more people in Amsterdam are asking for money on the street has not escaped the notice of the entrepreneurs and residents of the Hoofddorpplein neighborhood. They let it be known in a flyer distributed in their shopping area.

In the flyer they ask the question: Money Giving? Yes or No? The answer is a resolute: no! In doing so, they cite the advice of "professional counselors." People who ask for money don't actually need money, they know in Amsterdam South. After all, they already receive shelter, food and medicine, the flyer says. Moreover, giving money would have a pull effect.

The senders (who claim to strive for a beautiful, social and vibrant neighborhood) claim that the intentions of beggars are insincere. In turn, I doubt the intentions of the drafters. Are the people who cannot keep up in society possibly disrupting the polished look of the neighborhood and shopping area?

Yes, seeing people trying to survive on the streets give a sense of discomfort. It confronts you with the growing group of people in serious trouble. The flyer does not recommend understanding, but it does offer a phone number to report nuisances. Is that really the attitude advised by "professional counselors?"

The very professionals of De Regenboog Groep call for compassion. After all, homelessness and psychological problems mainly burden those involved themselves. The 17,000 homeless people in Amsterdam often do not have a good life. People wandering the streets confused need attention and care rather than expulsion. If they ask for help or money, it is not out of opulence. Their presence evokes discomfort. But it is also an appeal for caring from people who are actually better off.

In these winter months, I do choose to give. To the man who asks for a half brown (without seeds because he no longer has teeth) and a bowl of salmon salad. A tip to the street paper vendor, or by showing someone the way to the winter shelter. What you should do? That's up to you. But I hope you let your heart speak.
