Ahmad (53) cooks for people who have little money and feel alone.
"I am originally from Lebanon. Twelve years ago I arrived in the Netherlands in the asylum seekers' center, where I stayed for three years. The friends I made there always thought I could cook well. And once when I was allowed to provide a buffet for a celebration, so many people were enthusiastic that I knew for sure I wanted to continue this. I love food, so actually cooking is pretty easy for me. But I wasn't a cook, so I learned all kinds of recipes and cooking methods through YouTube. So I learned from all cuisines: Italian, Indian and also Dutch cuisine. But all with my own "touch."
Only in Amsterdam
Eight years ago I came to Amsterdam. Starting my life here was very difficult, because I didn't know anyone and so I was all alone. I went to school two days a week and eventually ended up at De Regenboog Groep; I became a 'volunteer cook' at the Neighborhood Restaurants there. Here, people on a small budget, or who feel alone, can come and eat.
I got to know more people and the first time I walked down the street and someone called my name, I was like, 'wow!' That was really special. Now I know quite a lot of people and that's nice, walking down the street and running into acquaintances.
From the heart
I cook from the heart, not to become famous. By cooking I connect with people. And when I see a happy face of someone eating something I made, and see all the empty plates coming back, that makes me happy."
