Gerda Brian - volunteer at the Tabe Rienkshuis (died February 2, 2018)
"I think it's important that visitors to the walk-in centre are taken for granted. That you let them have their dignity and that they can choose. Because of that drug use, they lose their self-esteem. You have to give them the opportunity to rebuild that self-respect. Then they are already half way there. These people live at the bottom of society and are often gouged by misunderstanding and lovelessness. I got to know them by never judging, only listening. Through this, I discovered what little diamonds live among them."
Gerda laid out a blank book in the walk-in centre, in which everyone could vent their hearts by writing everything down.
The diaries were turned over to the city archives in 2011. They contain messages from visitors to the shelter. A selection of the stories was published in 2007 under the title The Angels of The Regenboog. From the proceeds of the book, Gerda organized outings for the visitors.
