De Regenboog Groep empowers Amsterdam residents in vulnerable situations. We do this together with them and with hundreds of volunteers. Our projects and programs focus on connection, empowerment, recovery, and self-determination.
As part of our Ukraine refugee support efforts, we work together with Ukrainians living in Amsterdam and many volunteers to foster connection, engagement, recovery, and self-determination. We approach this from the perspective of asking: what is actually possible?

About the position;
Would you like to work in a place where hospitality, community, culture, and social impact come together? Where you’ll not only ensure that Ukrainians living in Amsterdam feel welcome, but also work together with them—as well as residents of our shelters, neighbors, colleagues, and other Amsterdammers—to build a new community?
For our new location, Circus Odesa, in Beatrixpark, we’re looking for an enthusiastic and enterprising Community Builder.
Circus Odesa is new. Not everything is set in stone yet, and that’s exactly what makes this role special. We’re looking for someone who thrives on pioneering, connects easily with others, spots opportunities, and knows how to bring people together. Someone who doesn’t just wait for people to come to Circus Odesa, but goes out into the city themselves, seeks out residents, and discovers together with them what this place can become.
You’ll literally have one foot in the Circus and one foot in Amsterdam’s Ukrainian community.
About Circus Odesa
Circus Odesa will be a vibrant, entrepreneurial gathering place in Beatrixpark. A place where Ukrainian Amsterdammers, neighborhood residents, park visitors, entrepreneurs, volunteers, and other Amsterdammers can meet, collaborate, and learn from one another.
The venue combines daytime dining and drinks, event space rentals, cultural programming, activities, and events. There is room for social entrepreneurs, work experience opportunities, and initiatives centered on Ukrainian art and culture, education, sports, and community building.
Circus Odesa is a place for the entire city. We want to collaborate with the neighborhood, local entrepreneurs, cultural organizations, businesses, and existing initiatives in and around Beatrixpark.
Circus Odesa is not conceived for Ukrainian Amsterdammers, but created together with them. Since the location is new, we will explore, experiment, and develop.
What will you be doing?
As a Community Liaison, you’ll be the connecting force between Circus Odesa and the Ukrainian community in Amsterdam. You’ll be visible at the venue, but also regularly at the various shelters run by De Regenboog Groep where Ukrainian Amsterdammers live.
You’ll build relationships with residents and colleagues, listen to what’s on their minds, and gather ideas, talents, and initiatives. You’ll not only ensure that residents know where to find Circus Odesa, but—most importantly—that they feel a sense of ownership over the space. You encourage them to organize activities on their own and take responsibility. Perhaps someone wants to host a Ukrainian cooking night, put together an exhibition, or start a sports activity. You identify opportunities, bring people together, and help turn ideas into concrete initiatives.
You work on your own terms: you don’t take over tasks that residents can handle themselves, but instead provide space, trust, and support. At the same time, you look outward. You build a network with local residents, entrepreneurs, cultural organizations, volunteers, and businesses, and work with them to find new activities and opportunities for connection. You take the initiative, make connections, ask questions, and bring different worlds together. In this way, you help build an open, enterprising, and welcoming place where people can participate and put their talents to use.
Your responsibilities also include:
- You will actively build connections between Circus Odesa, the shelter locations, and the Ukrainian community in Amsterdam.
- You will regularly visit the shelter locations and stay informed about what is going on with the residents.
- You gather ideas, needs, talents, and initiatives and help residents translate these into activities and their own initiatives.
- You encourage residents to take the initiative, organize activities, and take on responsibility.
- You build a network with local residents, entrepreneurs, businesses, cultural organizations, volunteers, and other partners.
- You contribute to an engaging program and the further development of Circus Odesa.
- You will mentor residents and volunteers and help foster a warm, safe, and welcoming atmosphere.
- You will identify opportunities for new collaborations and turn them into concrete plans.
- You’ll work closely with the Program Coordinator, venue managers, work supervisors, the Food and Beverage Manager, and the Operations Manager at Circus Odesa.
Day-to-day operations;
The day-to-day operations of the location are the responsibility of the Operations Manager. You will focus primarily on growing the community around Circus Odesa, engaging residents and partners, and developing activities and initiatives. You’ll be visible on the work floor, but your work will also take place outside the venue. You’ll regularly be out and about in the city and at community centers to build relationships, gather ideas, and forge new connections.
When would you consider your work a success?
Over time, a place will emerge where people not only come to visit, but where they feel they belong. Ukrainian residents of Amsterdam take the initiative themselves, staff at the reception centers know how to make use of Circus Odesa, volunteers and local residents get involved, and partners from around the city know where to find the place. This creates an open and welcoming community where people meet, can support one another, and can put their talents to use.

- You have an affinity with the Ukrainian community in Amsterdam. Strong preference will be given to someone with a Ukrainian background.
- You are a good listener, pick up on cues, and know how to connect people and ideas.
- You are enterprising and creative and aren’t afraid to try new things.
- You are organized and work methodically, but can also adapt when not everything is set in stone.
- You are flexible, able to handle stress, and solution-oriented, and you maintain a clear overview even when things get busy.
- You enjoy working with others and know how to motivate them.
- You treat people who may need extra support with care.
- You’re willing to work varying shifts, including evenings and weekends.
- You have a good command of Dutch, English, and Ukrainian.
Experience in the creative sector, organizing activities, community building, or in a coordinating role is a plus.
