On Sunday, November 30 we invite you to a special evening centered around the new Award winning documentary Writing Hawa by Afghan director Najiba Noori. Filmed over a five-year period, the documentary tells the story of three generations of Hazara women from the same family in Afghanistan. Using her unique access to the family and with empathy, director Najiba Noori films her mother Hawa and her niece Zahra in their efforts to emancipate themselves from patriarchal traditions.

From Sept. 11, the film will run in over 15 movie theaters already. Via this website you can read more about the film and see the trailer. Especially for you, we are organizing this free screening at Lydia Neighborhood House.

After the screening, we'll talk it through. Using cards with inspiring questions we will explore a number of themes together:

🟡 Language as a means to independence - How does language help or hinder women to make their own choices and live independently?

🟡Emancipation within a patriarchal system - How can you extricate yourself from a family, community or society where men often hold most power, and how can men help with that very thing?

🟡 Between two worlds: multilingualism and identity - What does it mean for your identity and sense of belonging if you grow up with multiple languages, but are not literate in all of them?

🟡 Transference of culture, norms and expectations - How do you, as a young person, cope with the rules and expectations you inherit from your parents when you yourself are growing up in a different environment?

For whom?

For anyone who wants to be touched, listen, share and learn. Feel free to bring someone along!
